Root canal treatment is one of the best ways to remove infection and save your natural tooth. At Sorriso Ezmerli Dental Studio, our procedures focus on treating the cause of pain while making your recovery as comfortable as possible.
It is normal to feel mild and temporary tenderness as the area heals. This guide will help you understand what to expect and how to protect your tooth for long-term success.
Please feel reassured that the following sensations are normal and part of the healing process:
Initial Tenderness:
Mild soreness or tenderness around the treated tooth is normal and may last for 3–5 days.
Controllable Discomfort:
Any discomfort is usually mild and can be controlled with common pain relievers such as ibuprofen.
Temporary Filling Sensation:
If a temporary filling was placed, you may feel that the tooth surface is slightly different. This is normal, but the tooth should be handled with extra care.
Following these steps helps ensure smooth healing and prevents future problems:
Manage Anesthesia:
Do not eat or drink until the numbness completely wears off (usually 2–4 hours) to avoid accidentally biting your cheek, tongue, or lip.
Gentle Hygiene:
You may continue brushing and flossing as usual starting the day after treatment. Be gentle around the treated tooth.
The Critical Next Step (Permanent Restoration):
The treated tooth must be protected with a permanent filling or crown, usually within 1–3 weeks, to prevent re-infection or tooth breakage.
Attend Follow-Up:
A follow-up visit is scheduled within 1–2 weeks to check healing and place the permanent restoration.
Radiographic Checks:
In some cases, a follow-up X-ray is needed after 6 months. Otherwise, it will be done after 1 year to ensure proper healing.
These precautions are especially important while the temporary filling is still in place:
Dietary Restrictions:
Eat soft foods during the first 24 hours after treatment.
Avoid Pressure:
Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods, and do not chew on the treated tooth until the permanent restoration is completed.
Prevent Failure:
Attend all follow-up visits and complete the final restoration as soon as advised to ensure long-term success.
Note on Restoration Cost:
If a full crown is placed later, the foundation (core build-up) is included at no extra cost.
Your care continues after you leave the clinic. Please contact us if you experience:
Persistent or Worsening Pain:
Pain that becomes severe, lasts longer than 5 days, or worsens instead of improving.
Swelling or Fever:
Swelling inside or outside the mouth that does not improve within 2–3 days, or if you develop a fever.
Temporary Filling Issues:
If the temporary filling becomes loose or falls out before your scheduled visit.
Difficulty Chewing:
Discomfort when chewing that does not improve within 2–3 weeks.
Signs of Infection:
A persistent bad taste that does not go away.
